iOS app development cost UK: how to budget the first year

A credible iPhone app budget needs a defined first release, Apple’s fees, backend work, support and clear ownership terms. Here is how to price the whole first year and compare quotes properly.

The answer to “ios app development cost uk” is that no credible universal project price exists. A useful figure depends on a defined product scope, its backend, release requirements and the work needed after launch.

The defensible approach is to specify a small, testable first version, calculate its complete first-year cost and obtain a fixed written quote against that scope. Any headline range given before those decisions is an estimate of an unknown product.

Why “ios app development cost uk” ranges mislead founders

Page-one estimates place supposedly simple apps into sharply conflicting price bands. The word “simple” can describe a few static screens, or it can describe an account-based product with private data, an API, an admin system and App Store submission support.

Developer salaries do not solve this problem. The National Careers Service lists annual app-developer salaries from £31,000 to £65,000, but those employment figures cannot determine a project total without a scope, delivery team and schedule.

A cheap quote may cover only the visible iPhone interface. Product discovery, UX design, backend infrastructure, database work, administration tools, testing, App Store assets, submission and post-launch support may sit outside it. Those omissions often appear once development has started and changing supplier becomes difficult.

We do not invent a ZeroPixel house range. We provide a fixed written quote after agreeing the product, assumptions, acceptance criteria and exclusions. That gives the client a price tied to a deliverable rather than a marketing category.

What changes an iOS development quote

An iOS product usually contains several distinct areas of work:

  • Product discovery and prioritisation
  • User journeys, visual design and interface states
  • Native development in Swift or SwiftUI
  • Backend APIs, data storage and authentication
  • Browser-based administration tools
  • Testing, TestFlight distribution and release preparation

Screen count is a poor measure. A sign-in screen can involve password reset, session handling, account deletion, security controls and failure states. A single record screen may need validation, media uploads, permissions and data synchronisation.

Features such as subscriptions, user-generated content, push notifications, maps, HealthKit, AI, offline synchronisation and third-party integrations each affect architecture and testing. AI features also introduce model behaviour, usage controls and operational costs beyond the visible interface.

Less visible multipliers include uncertain requirements, an unreliable existing API, legacy-data migration, accessibility, localisation, security reviews and support for older iOS versions. These are engineering constraints, so they need to appear in the quote rather than being left as assumptions.

Personal, financial, health or other sensitive data adds work during discovery, architecture and testing. The ICO says data protection should be integrated from the design stage and throughout the processing lifecycle. Privacy cannot be treated as a final legal checkbox once the database and integrations are already built.

A first-version scope that suppliers can quote properly

Consider a small account-based tracking app built in SwiftUI. Its native interface includes onboarding, email sign-in, password reset, a dashboard, create and edit flows, history, record details and push notifications.

The complete deliverable could be defined like this:

AreaIncluded scope
iPhone appSwiftUI interface, authentication, dashboard, records, history and notification handling
BackendCloud API, database, user accounts and record storage
AdministrationLimited browser tool for account lookup and basic support tasks
OperationsAnalytics, crash reporting, monitoring and backups
ReleaseTestFlight build, App Store copy and assets, privacy information and one initial submission

Acceptance criteria make that scope testable. Sign-in should handle valid, invalid and reset journeys. Record creation should validate required data, save it through the API and display it consistently in the dashboard, history and detail views. Notification behaviour should be defined for allowed, denied and unavailable permissions.

The quote should also name the minimum supported iOS release and an agreed device test matrix. “Works on iPhone” is too vague because layouts, hardware capabilities and operating-system behaviour vary.

Explicit exclusions could include Android, subscriptions, social login, offline-first synchronisation, AI, HealthKit, multilingual content and complex content moderation. Adding one later should go through written change control with its cost and schedule impact recorded.

This scope is focused enough for suppliers to estimate the same product. It produces a meaningful fixed quote without pretending that its price applies to every iPhone app.

Apple’s fees and commission belong in the budget

The Apple Developer Program cost is part of the first-year total. Apple’s UK Developer app listing currently shows £78.99, while its global programme information states US$99 per membership year or the local-currency price where available. Check the live UK fee when budgeting because published agency articles can become outdated.

The business should normally control its own developer account. That keeps releases, agreements and access under the organisation’s control if its supplier changes.

The payment route depends on what the customer buys:

  • Digital functionality or content consumed in the app generally points to Apple In-App Purchase.
  • Apple’s guidance distinguishes this from physical goods, which can use Apple Pay.
  • Services fulfilled offline should be classified against the current rules before payment development begins.

Apple states a standard 30% commission for App Store digital goods and services, reduced to 15% for developers enrolled in the Small Business Program. The reduced rate is not automatic. Confirm current eligibility, proceeds thresholds and associated-developer-account treatment before using it in forecasts.

App Store commission does not apply indiscriminately to every payment a business receives. Product classification matters, so payment rules should be settled before the commercial model and technical scope are approved.

Build cost is only part of the first-year total

A complete budget should account for:

  • Discovery, design, native development and backend development
  • VAT where applicable, with the quote stating whether it is included
  • Apple Developer Program membership
  • Hosting, databases, file storage and backups
  • Transactional email or SMS
  • Third-party APIs and monitoring services
  • Support, security updates and bug fixes
  • Payment-processing charges and applicable App Store commission

Engineering time and App Review should appear separately in the schedule. Apple says App Review aims to review at least 50% of submissions within 24 hours and 90% within 48 hours. These are targets. Questions, rejection or a required code change can extend release time.

Maintenance should be estimated from the product’s dependencies and operational needs instead of applying an unsupported percentage to the original build. The work can include iOS and device compatibility, security updates, dependency upgrades, defect fixes, monitoring and responses to service failures.

Apple also requires privacy-practice information for new submissions and app updates, including the practices of integrated third-party partners. Analytics, crash reporting, advertising and external SDKs therefore affect release preparation as well as code.

Some UK organisations must also budget for the ICO data protection fee. The ICO says most liable organisations pay £52 or £78 annually, while the large-organisation tier is £3,763. Liability and the correct tier depend on the organisation’s circumstances, so they should be checked rather than assumed.

Choose native iOS only when the product benefits from it

Swift and SwiftUI make sense when the product needs strong iPhone integration, demanding device capabilities, reliable offline behaviour or an interface shaped specifically for iOS. Native development can also be appropriate when an iPhone-first audience is central to the product strategy.

A custom web application may be the better first release for forms, dashboards, account portals and content-led services requiring broad device access. Web delivery avoids Apple membership and App Review overhead. Apple also says Developer Program membership is not required for standards-based web push notifications.

A web app still needs product design, engineering, hosting, security and maintenance. Its advantage comes from matching the distribution and device requirements more closely, rather than from being inherently cheap.

Our perspective comes from shipping both web software and native iOS products. CalorieFlow is our own Swift and SwiftUI iPhone app, rather than client work, so we have dealt directly with the product, testing and App Store decisions described here.

How to compare quotes and protect what you pay for

Ask every supplier to price the same checklist:

  • Discovery and product definition
  • UX and visual design
  • Native iOS development
  • Backend, database and admin system
  • Accessibility and device testing
  • TestFlight builds, store assets and submission support
  • Defect warranty period and ongoing maintenance options
  • VAT and third-party costs

A proposal should name deliverables, assumptions, exclusions and acceptance criteria. It should also include change-control terms and a schedule that separates engineering from Apple’s review process. Otherwise, two totals can look comparable while covering different responsibilities.

The contract needs equal scrutiny. Require source-code access, customer control of the repository and Apple account, third-party licence details, credentials, technical documentation and a usable handover process.

UK copyright protection applies automatically to original software. The Intellectual Property Office says the creator is normally the first copyright owner of commissioned work unless ownership is agreed otherwise in writing. Paying an invoice alone does not transfer copyright, so suitable written assignment terms matter.

A fixed quote is valuable only when the scope, ownership and full first-year obligations are fixed with it. If a proposal cannot be checked against those items, it is not ready to approve.

Send us the product outline and we will help turn it into a quoteable first release.

Common questions

How much does it cost to make an iPhone app in the UK?
There is no reliable universal price because suppliers may be quoting different products. Define the first release, backend, testing, App Store work, support and exclusions, then request a fixed written quote against that scope.
How much does Apple charge to put an app on the App Store?
Apple’s UK Developer app listing currently shows £78.99 for one year of Apple Developer Program membership. Check the live fee before purchasing because local pricing can change.
Does Apple take a cut of in-app purchases?
Apple’s standard commission for qualifying App Store digital goods and services is 30%. Developers accepted into the Small Business Program receive a 15% rate, subject to its eligibility rules. The commission does not apply to every business payment, so the product being sold matters.
How long does it take to build an iOS app?
The schedule depends on the product scope, backend, integrations, data migration and testing requirements. A proposal should separate engineering time from App Review because Apple’s review process is outside the supplier’s direct control.
Is it cheaper to build a web app than an iOS app?
A web app can cost less when it serves the same user need without native device features or App Store distribution. It still requires design, engineering, hosting, security and maintenance, so the choice should follow the product requirements rather than a general price rule.
Who owns the code when an agency builds my app?
Under UK rules, the creator is normally the first copyright owner of commissioned work unless suitable written terms transfer ownership. The contract should cover copyright assignment, source-code access, repository control, third-party licences, credentials and documentation.
