Browserbase runs headless browsers as a service. Instead of maintaining your own fleet of Chrome instances — with the memory leaks, the version drift, the proxy handling and the machine that reboots at the worst possible time — you request a browser, it appears, it does the work, and it disappears. What's left is the automation itself.

That matters because a surprising amount of important work still lives behind an interface with no API. Supplier portals, council and government systems, legacy CRMs, booking platforms, marketplaces — the data is on a screen and the only way to it is a browser. Automation built on a developer's laptop can reach it once; automation built on infrastructure can reach it every morning at six without anyone watching.

We build on Browserbase with Playwright for deterministic flows, and with Stagehand where pages change often enough that hard-coded selectors would break weekly. Both come with the parts that make automation trustworthy in production: retries, session recordings so you can watch exactly what happened on a failed run, alerting when something changes upstream, and a clear log of what ran and what it found.

Browserbase — common questions

Why not just run browsers on our own server?

You can, and for a single small job it's fine. The cost appears at scale: browsers are memory-hungry, Chrome versions drift, sessions leak, proxies need managing, and one machine can only do so much at once. Managed infrastructure removes all of that maintenance and scales from one browser to hundreds without you provisioning anything. Below a certain volume we'll tell you to keep it simple.

Is browser automation legal?

It depends entirely on what's being automated. Logging into your own accounts, pulling your own data out of a supplier portal, and collecting genuinely public information are all normal business activity. Circumventing access controls, ignoring a site's terms, or harvesting personal data raises real legal and UK GDPR questions. We scope this at the start and decline work that doesn't stand up.

What happens when the target website changes?

It will — that's the defining problem of this work. We design for it: resilient selectors rather than brittle ones, AI-assisted element matching where a page changes often, validation that detects when extracted data suddenly looks wrong, and alerts that tell us before you notice. Maintenance is usually a small monthly retainer rather than an emergency call.

Browserbase or Kernel — what's the difference?

They overlap heavily and we build on both. Browserbase is the more established option for high-volume automation and data extraction with strong Playwright and Stagehand support. Kernel leans towards agent workloads, with persistent browser profiles and deployment tooling for agents that need to keep state between runs. For most extraction and automation jobs, either works and we'll pick on your specifics.

How much does browser automation cost to build?

A focused automation — one system, one repeated task — is typically a low four-figure project, and the business case is usually obvious when you count the hours it replaces. Multi-system pipelines and agent workloads are quoted on scope. Browserbase's own usage cost is separate, published, and typically modest for the volumes UK businesses actually run.
