The short answer: what Shopify costs in the UK
For a conventional UK online store, Shopify Basic costs an effective £19 a month on annual billing or £25 month to month. That subscription is only the baseline; card, app, build, maintenance, VAT and international-selling charges determine the real cost.
Real Shopify costs should be divided into year-one build expenditure and ongoing operating expenditure. Treating the platform as a £19 subscription hides most of the budget.
Shopify currently advertises these UK plan prices:
| Plan | Monthly billing | Effective monthly rate on annual billing | Annual subscription |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | £25 | £19 | £228 |
| Grow | £65 | £49 | £588 |
| Advanced | £344 | £259 | £3,108 |
| Plus | From £1,800 | Not stated | Confirm with Shopify |
Shopify Plus pricing UK searches often focus on the headline fee. At that level, implementation, integrations and ongoing engineering are likely to matter more than the subscription alone.
Shopify Starter plan: we would not model Starter as a like-for-like substitute for a conventional Basic storefront. It may suit selling through links, messages or social channels, but a business requiring a structured shop, navigation and product catalogue should compare against Basic.
A standard £20 UK online-card order on Basic incurs 2% plus 25p in processing. That is 65p before any share of the subscription, apps, design or maintenance is allocated to the order.
Calculate your real Shopify costs
A useful Shopify cost calculator must expose its assumptions. A result based only on turnover will be wrong if it ignores order count, because fixed card charges make low-value orders proportionally more expensive.
Use these inputs:
| Input | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Plan and billing | Basic, Grow, Advanced or Plus; monthly or annual |
| Orders and value | Monthly order count and average order value |
| Payment mix | Domestic cards, international cards and external gateways |
| Store software | Monthly app charges and usage-based app fees |
| Initial build | Theme, design, development, migration and testing |
| Other operating costs | Domain, maintenance, monitoring and support |
| International sales | Cross-currency sales and orders using duty calculation |
| Tax | Shopify Tax charges where eligible |
| VAT | VAT charged by suppliers that cannot be reclaimed |
For Basic with UK online cards, the annual model is:
subscription + 12 × monthly orders × (2% × average order value + £0.25) + apps + build + theme + domain + maintenance + international charges + irrecoverable VAT
For Grow, Advanced or Plus, substitute the processing and external-gateway rates in the current commercial terms. Do not assume an old comparison article still reflects the rate on your account.
Add VAT as a separate switch rather than burying it inside each input. Where a supplier charge attracts VAT and the business cannot reclaim it, multiply that charge by the standard UK VAT rate of 20%. Where eligible input VAT is reclaimed, retain it in the cash-flow view but remove it from the net cost view.
This is why Shopify costs per month cannot be represented by one universal figure. A useful calculator returns at least year-one cash cost, recurring annual run rate, effective monthly cost and three-year total cost of ownership.
Basic, Grow or Advanced: when does upgrading pay?
Basic is our rational default until a higher plan pays for itself. The annual subscription difference between Basic and Grow is £360; between Grow and Advanced it is £2,520.
Use this break-even calculation:
annual subscription increase ÷ per-order fee saving = orders required to break even
If the higher plan also removes an app, manual process or integration workaround, include that saving. Operational features have value only where the business will use them; a longer feature list is not itself a return on investment.
We would compare plans using the merchant’s actual payment mix and current Shopify quote. Staff access, reporting, markets and fulfilment requirements should be checked against the live feature matrix before committing, particularly during a migration.
An upgrade is justified when measurable fee savings and operational savings exceed its subscription increase. “We might need it later” is not a calculation.
How Shopify transaction fees stack on each sale
Shopify Payments processing and Shopify’s additional fee for an external gateway are different charges. With an external provider, there can be two fee layers: Shopify’s plan-dependent transaction fee and the provider’s own processing charge.
On a £20 Basic order paid using a standard UK online card:
- Percentage charge: 2% of £20 = 40p
- Fixed charge: 25p
- Total processing: 65p
- Effective processing rate: 3.25%
The effective percentage falls as order value rises because the fixed 25p is spread across a larger sale. It rises when average order value falls. International cards, currency conversion, external gateways and the merchant’s payment mix can alter the result again.
Refund assumptions also belong in the calculator. Use the amount actually retained or returned under the current payment terms rather than assuming every original charge disappears automatically.
The bill itself can contain more than the plan. Shopify documents recurring subscriptions and apps, usage-based fees and immediate one-off purchases such as themes and domains. Reconcile that bill by category so an expanding app stack does not become invisible operating expenditure.
Three realistic UK Shopify budgets
We will not invent market prices for themes, apps or developers to make a sample look complete. Those costs depend on the actual brief. Instead, these presets calculate the sourced Shopify layer exactly and leave every project-specific input visible.
| Preset | Visible assumptions | Exact known year-one subtotal | Exact three-year subtotal before project-specific inputs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lean DIY shop | Basic annual; 20 £20 UK orders a month; Shopify Payments; free theme; owner maintenance | £384 | £1,152 |
| Growing customised store | Basic annual; 375 £20 UK orders a month; upgrade tested against savings | £3,153 | £9,459 |
| International operation | Advanced annual; £90,000 cross-currency sales; applicable duty calculation; eligible Shopify Tax pricing | £5,583 before card processing | £16,749 before card processing |
The lean subtotal is £228 subscription plus £156 processing. Its complete year-one formula is £384 + domain + apps + build + irrecoverable VAT.
The growing subtotal is £228 subscription plus £2,925 processing. Add the theme or custom sections, app stack, integrations, analytics, testing and a defined support allowance. If moving to Grow saves more than its £360 annual subscription difference, change the preset.
The international subtotal contains the £3,108 Advanced subscription, £1,800 currency conversion, £450 duty-calculation charge and £225 Shopify Tax charge. It is deliberately a stress test using £90,000 of applicable sales; card processing, engineering, ERP or fulfilment integration, monitoring and VAT remain explicit inputs.
A store with a cheap initial build but several overlapping apps can cost more over time than focused custom ecommerce development. We usually prefer a smaller dependency set, custom sections where they remove recurring software and a maintenance allowance that reflects actual integrations. Strong ecommerce UI and UX design should also be budgeted as build work, not disguised as another monthly plugin.
VAT, tax and UK pricing obligations
A UK business must normally register for VAT when taxable turnover over the previous 12 months exceeds £90,000, or when it expects to exceed £90,000 in the next 30 days, under HMRC’s registration rules. Crossing that threshold changes customer pricing, bookkeeping and cash-flow assumptions.
Model two views:
- VAT-registered and eligible to reclaim: show VAT in cash flow, then remove eligible reclaimed input VAT from net cost.
- VAT remains a cost: add 20% wherever VAT is actually charged by the supplier.
Shopify can automate calculations, but the merchant generally remains responsible for registration, filing and remittance unless an eligible filing service is used. Automation does not transfer legal responsibility by itself.
For UK stores created on or after 13 May 2026, Shopify Tax is free until £100,000 of lifetime sales. Its documented pricing then applies 0.25% to eligible UK, EU and Canadian orders on Basic, Grow or Advanced, or 0.15% on Plus, with a 99p per-order cap (Shopify Tax pricing).
Consumer prices must normally show unavoidable charges and taxes such as VAT upfront. The CMA states that non-compliance can attract a penalty of up to 10% of turnover or £300,000, whichever is greater.
These examples are budgeting guidance, not individual tax or legal advice.
The extra cost of selling internationally
International orders need their own cost stack. For a UK Shopify Payments store accepting a currency different from its payout currency, Shopify documents a 2% currency-conversion fee in addition to payment processing.
Shopify also states that its duty and import-tax calculation fee is temporarily 0.5% on applicable orders, including an order where the calculated duty is zero.
On a £20 cross-currency order, the visible stack can therefore include:
- 65p Basic UK-card example, where that rate applies
- 40p currency conversion
- 10p duty-calculation fee where applicable
- 5p Shopify Tax after the relevant eligibility threshold
- Any difference for international-card processing
That produces £1.20 in known charges before any international-card-rate difference, app allocation, subscription allocation or VAT. Markets, tax, duty and fulfilment integrations should then be included in the build and maintenance scope rather than treated as checkout configuration alone.
Shopify vs Etsy costs for a £20 product
On Shopify Basic, the known UK processing charge is 65p for a standard £20 card sale. Shopify also carries its £228 annual subscription when paid annually.
An honest Etsy comparison needs the current listing, transaction, payment-processing, advertising and tax treatment that applies to the merchant. Because no current Etsy fee schedule is included in this model, we would not print a break-even number and present it as durable.
Instead, enter Etsy’s current core per-order cost as E and use:
monthly break-even orders = £19 ÷ (E − £0.65)
This isolates platform and payment costs. Add Shopify design, development and app expenditure separately, and add any Etsy charges that apply to the seller. Use a current Etsy statement rather than a rounded comparison copied from another agency article.

Common questions
How much does Shopify really cost?
Shopify Basic costs £25 month to month or an effective £19 a month with annual billing in the UK. The real cost also includes payment processing, apps, themes, development, maintenance, domains, VAT where applicable and international-selling charges.
Is Shopify worth it in the UK?
It can be, provided the store has a clear commercial case and the app stack is controlled. Basic is usually the sensible starting point until payment-fee savings or operational requirements make a higher plan pay for itself.
Is it cheaper to sell on Etsy or Shopify?
That depends on order volume and the Etsy fees that apply to the seller. Shopify has a fixed subscription plus payment processing, so Etsy can cost less at low volume, while Shopify may become more economical as enough orders spread its subscription cost.
How much does Shopify take from a $20 sale?
A dollar sale cannot be calculated accurately using UK sterling pricing because card rates and plan pricing vary by market. If the question means a £20 UK sale on Basic using a standard UK online card, the processing charge is 65p: 2% plus 25p.
