Does searching “grants for website development uk” reveal a national scheme?

Eligible UK businesses can receive grant funding for website, e-commerce, app and software development. However, grants for website development uk businesses can actually use are usually tied to a location, sector or qualifying innovation project.

There is no single national website grant open to every small business. Official business guidance says grants commonly have a local or sectoral focus, so eligibility matters more than a generic promise of website funding.

Checked on 11 October 2026: Schemes can close when budgets are committed. Awards are discretionary and depend on the applicant, project, available funding and compliance with the funder’s rules.

Many pages ranking for website grants UK searches promote one local fund or repeat generic award ranges without naming the funder, deadline or procurement conditions. Those details determine whether the money is genuinely available to your business.

It also helps to compare like with like:

  • A grant contributes towards eligible expenditure and does not normally need repaying if its conditions are met.
  • A loan must be repaid, even when promoted alongside business support.
  • Free consultancy may provide advice but no contribution towards development costs.
  • General business support can include mentoring, diagnostics or referrals rather than cash.

The table below covers schemes with relevant digital expenditure in their published criteria or a maintained entry in our UK grants database. “Up to” is crucial: the maximum is not an entitlement, and the funder decides the award.

What counts as an eligible website or software project?

“Digital project” is not one standard category. A modest brochure redesign, an e-commerce platform, an operational web application and an experimental AI product have different purposes, costs and technical risks.

A fund may support one without supporting the others:

  • A brochure website primarily publishes marketing information. Our web design work may include user journeys, information architecture and interface design, but that does not automatically make a redesign grant-eligible.
  • An e-commerce build adds product management, payments, fulfilment workflows and customer accounts. West Lothian explicitly lists e-commerce builds, while South Yorkshire can cover e-commerce solutions.
  • A custom web application can include permissions, dashboards, integrations and business-specific workflows. North Lanarkshire lists bespoke software as eligible capital expenditure.
  • Business automation connects systems or replaces repetitive operational processes. The application should identify the process being changed rather than describing the work as generic digital transformation.
  • AI development may involve a novel product or research uncertainty, but adding a standard assistant to a website does not automatically create a qualifying R&D project.

Apps and bespoke software can therefore qualify under some software development grants UK programmes. The South Yorkshire criteria expressly include new software and app development, but that does not extend to every fund.

Keep hosting, maintenance, subscriptions, routine marketing and ongoing support as separate cost lines. Do not assume off-the-shelf software or a brochure-only refresh is eligible: ask the funder to classify each ambiguous item before it enters the application.

How many web development quotes will you need?

There is no universal quote rule for a web design grant. The requirement comes from the individual scheme and may apply to every proposed item rather than the project as a whole.

HIE requires evidence of at least three contractor quotations. North Lanarkshire requires two quotes from different suppliers for each proposed item, with each quote dated within the previous three months.

A grant-ready development quote should include:

  • customer and supplier names and contact details;
  • quote date, validity period and project timetable;
  • an itemised scope with deliverables and milestones;
  • assumptions, dependencies and explicit exclusions;
  • separate costs for discovery, design, development and optional work;
  • totals excluding and including VAT;
  • payment terms and any proposed deposit; and
  • enough technical detail for the funder to compare competing submissions.

Quotes should describe comparable outcomes. One supplier quoting for a template shop and another quoting for a bespoke platform does not give the funder a meaningful comparison.

Approval and cash flow: do not start the project too soon

Do not pay a deposit, sign an unconditional order or authorise development until the funder has confirmed in writing that you may proceed. An application acknowledgement is not the same thing as an award letter.

Check whether the grant is paid retrospectively. If it is, your business may need enough cash to pay the full supplier invoice before submitting evidence and receiving the grant contribution. A large headline award is of little use if the business cannot carry the project cost during the claim period.

Ask how VAT is treated, particularly if your business can reclaim it. West Lothian’s programme is specifically for VAT-registered businesses, but its project structure should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

The funder may ask for invoices, bank evidence, completed deliverables and proof that the approved work was delivered by the named supplier. Confirm the completion deadline as well: a delayed integration or data migration can put a claim at risk if it pushes delivery beyond the award period.

Do not change the supplier, scope or cost allocation without asking whether written consent is required. Get ambiguous answers in writing before committing money.

National schemes that usually do not fit an agency-built website

The UK Government’s Find a Grant service lets businesses search government grants, filter opportunities and review application instructions. The service also says more grants will be added as it develops, so it should not be treated as a complete index of every local programme.

Our checked record did not classify Innovate UK Smart grants as open on 11 October 2026. More fundamentally, innovation funding is not a substitute for a website grant: a normal marketing site does not become R&D because it uses modern software.

A credible innovation application normally needs a genuinely novel product, technical uncertainty and a qualifying development project. The website used to market that product may be incidental rather than eligible project expenditure.

Frontier AI Phase 1 illustrates another screening issue. If a programme’s subcontractor restriction prevents an agency from delivering the core work, it cannot fund a conventional agency-delivered build. Read the live competition rules before spending time reshaping a normal website proposal around an innovation label.

A practical application and supplier-quote workflow

The correct sequence is straightforward:

  1. Confirm the business location, size, sector and trading-status requirements.
  2. Speak to the funder about the proposed project and any uncertain cost categories.
  3. Define an eligible scope rather than starting with a generic website package.
  4. Obtain the required number of comparable, valid supplier quotes.
  5. Submit the application with the requested supporting evidence.
  6. Wait for written approval and permission to begin.
  7. Commission the supplier, deliver the approved scope and retain claim evidence.

A useful development scope separates discovery, UX, interface design, development, integrations, data migration, testing and training. Hosting, licences, maintenance and post-launch support can then be shown separately, making it easier for the funder to exclude a cost without making the whole quote unusable.

ZeroPixel is independent of every funder mentioned here. We cannot influence an assessment, and obtaining a quote from us does not improve the likelihood of an award. The funder alone decides whether the applicant, project and expenditure qualify.

Most failed planning starts with a supplier proposal and searches for a fund afterwards. Start with the scheme rules, make the eligible outcome precise, and only then ask suppliers to price the same approved scope.

If you need a supplier scope, we offer a free, no-obligation fixed grant-ready quote within 72 hours, or you can discuss the proposed build with us.

Common questions

Can I get a government grant for a website in the UK?
Possibly. Regional programmes can fund website, e-commerce or digital development where the business, location and proposed expenditure meet their criteria. The funder decides whether the project qualifies.
Is there a national website grant for small businesses?
There is no universal national grant available to every UK small business for a website. Most relevant opportunities are regional, sector-specific or linked to a defined productivity or innovation objective.
How many quotes do I need for a grant application?
It depends on the scheme. Some require multiple competing quotations, while others set different procurement conditions according to the project value. Read the current rules before asking suppliers to quote.
What should a supplier quote include for a grant application?
It should identify the customer and supplier, quote date, validity, itemised scope, deliverables, timetable, assumptions and exclusions. Costs should be clear both excluding and including VAT, with payment terms stated.
Can a grant pay for an app or bespoke software?
Yes, some programmes expressly support apps, bespoke software, e-commerce platforms or other digital systems. That does not mean every digital grant covers every type of development, so match the proposed work to the fund’s published categories.
Can I start the work before my grant is approved?
Do not start unless the funder has confirmed in writing that you may do so. Paying a deposit, placing an unconditional order or allowing development to begin early can make expenditure ineligible.
